Open Letter to East Toronto Branch 11

Subject: Honouring Veterans: Branch 11 of the Royal Canadian Legion every year holds a Veterans Week. This year I was asked to partake in their programme What a wonderful event! They had racks of uniforms, tables of displays – and several Veterans on hand to answer questions. Students from the near by schools are invited to attend. The programme is most effective – teachers bring their classes, the Veterans sit in a row facing them and the children look at the displays, touch and try on those items that are allowed – ask more questions and have a good time.

The first class consisted of children in the 8 to 10 age group and were mostly from immigrant families. They were delightful and obviously the subject had been well taught. The questions were relevant, intelligent and sometimes very hard to answer. Can any of you explain to an 8 year old the reason for WWII? The second class was again from immigrant families, a little older but still enthusiastic and well informed. They walked a good distance in the pouring rain with no complaints or whining and cheerfully donned their wet coats for the walk home. This time instead of random questioning the children wishing to partake lined up at the mike and allowed only one question each. It was obvious they had never used a mike before as the enhanced value of their own voices startled them.

Branch 11 is to be commended for this most worthwhile and successful project. The work and time involved is enormous. This is not just one event - they do it every year – carefully storing, cleaning, polishing and mending the artifacts. As with many worthwhile projects such as this, the hours and difficulty of work behind the scenes often goes unnoticed.  I was so impressed and of course honoured to be invited to take part.

Margaret Haliburton,

 WWII WREN
